Desalination

Water is a precious resource on Lana`i. Our lives and our economy are dependent upon having a reliable supply of clean drinking water for today, and for future generations.

As we learn more about water on Lana`i, Pulama Lana`i will continue to research and review a variety of technologies and best practices suited to developing and conserving water resources on Lana`i. Desalination is one such technology that is being explored.

Desalination involves removing salt and minerals from seawater to produce fresh drinking water.  In 2013, more than 17,000 desalination plants were operating in the world, producing more than 21 billion gallons of water a day.  Desalination can be particularly beneficial to island communities to supplement their water needs.
